How great that a new dinosaur has been described from the Island!
When it was found, it was thought to be Polacanthus but is now a new genus in its own right, Vectipelta. It was found in 1994 by Lin Spearpoint and excavated with Martin Simpson. They nicknamed it Spike and it got massive media attention at the time. It was even made into a limited edition Wade money box (see photo).
Lots of pieces were retrieved from the cliff and beach (and from other collectors) and the whole specimen is now in Dinosaur Isle Museum. The species honours Professor Paul Barrett who is an authority on British dinosaurs.
It will forever be known by collectors as Spike or the Spearpoint dinosaur.
